On the road but spent some time at a little publicized hearing in Carson.

Deb Coffey has written a great piece. The driving force in the removal of our wild horses is a resource grab on public land. This is one piece of it…

Chinese government money is buying one of U.S.A.’s biggest mines

It seems like there’s not much hope for Mt. Hope in Nevada.  A brave group of American farmers and ranchers (and so far, Eureka County, NV) are all that is standing between our valuable American resources and water rights, and a Chinese company that has taken a $745 million loan from a bank fully owned by the Chinese Government.

Mt. Hope is about 23 miles northwest of Eureka, NV, and contains the world’s largest and highest grade undeveloped molybdenum project, the Mt. Hope Project.

What is molybdenum?  It has the 6th highest melting point of any element, and is used in nuclear reactors, high temperature superalloys, aircraft parts, electrical components, high strength steel alloys, high pressure and high temperature applications, medical applications, gas and oil pipelines to prevent leaks, and as a catalyst in oil refining.  It is also a catalyst in liquefaction (helping refiners meet EPA and EEU pollution emission standards) and co-processing, the process of liquefaction of tires and plastics.  Demand is increasing in the green industry since it’s used in the production of pipes and tanks that transport biofuels, which are corrosive.  Molybdenum is also used in thin film CIGS solar panels, which are less expensive than traditional solar cells.

General Moly is 25% owned by Hanlong USA Mining, a subsidiary of Sichuan Hanlong Group, a Chinese “private enterprise.”  Sichuan Hanlong Group recently received a $1.5 billion loan from the Export-Import Bank of China (China Eximbank) to support its investments in overseas mining opportunities, with $745 million towards General Moly.  The Export-Import Bank of China is fully owned by the Chinese government and under the leadership of the State Council.  It’s a “government policy bank.”  Hanlong mining’s website states “China is on a long term growth path to becoming the world’s largest economy” and that Hanlong is “undergoing a period of rapid international expansion.”

China is securing molybdenum resources.  China has been the world’s largest producer of molybdenum, supplying almost a third of global supplies.  Increasing global demand may prompt China to restrict exports.  This may cause the price of molybdenum to rise significantly.  In October, 2010, China’s Ministry of Land and natural Resources declared molybdenum a strategic metal.

And then ask yourself… what do they want? How will this hurt the horses? Remember this is in an area that was just rounded up… will another EIS call for zeroing out?

Received a present from someone and wanted to share it with you… my “mascot.” Mounted on the dash…

What more can ya' say?

Reports from the road soon. Check in with Grass Roots to see progress on the Silver King case and live streaming…

Laura, I just copied this from my comment to the full article.

The wild ones are going, the land is going, and we will be at the mercy of the rest of the world. This need to be stopped NOW!

I don’t know how anyone here feels about “WikiLeaks”, but I found this article from the Guardian (UK) VERY scary. It’s about our present and future dealings with China and the things our equally scary government is doing (and NOT doing) to appease them.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/dec/04/wikileaks-cables-hillary-clinton-beijing

In the last sentence of the first paragraph Hillary asks, “How do you deal toughly with your banker?” With all due respect, Madam Secretary, YOU DON’T! Your banker deals toughly with you!

I sure wish WikiLeaks would “leak” China, but who would dare “blow the whistle”? It would have to be someone willing to sacrifice their own life and the lives of their family, friends, dogs, cats, and any other person, place or thing they hold dear.

There’s been a lot of Internet chatter about U.S. public lands being offered as collateral to back our massive debt, especially to China and Saudi Arabia. Once the bakery is open, every other nation we owe any substantial sum is going to want a slice of the American Pie.

We’ll be lucky to be left with crumbs and enough semi-polluted water to wash them down!

    • The threats to us are growing daily and it is for the people who are Not Lulled in lala land to get active and stand up to this. The horses are the first target of convenience here… there are others now going after ranchers and water. This is the fateful turning of events. Keep your ears and eyes open. mar

  2. Thanks Deb for getting nto this and telling us! There is a front page story in Time magazine this week about Wikileaks and our government is calling Julian Assange a terrorist. This is becoming a 1st Amendment fight, big time. We are connected to this and we are fighting for the wild ones and the heart of what America stands for! mar

I wonder how much foreign interests are going to be owning these large alternative energy plans in our West along with the mining. Pretty scary to have the DOI in charge of this considering their track record. I believe the horses are going, not because of the cattle ranchers, but because we are running out of oil faster than the government is letting on.

This is what Marti Oakley at PPJ GAZETTE had to say about wiki-links. Food for thought:

    Wiki-leak? Or pre-planned scare tactic?

So what are these people really upset about? Are they upset about the dirty world of US policy? Or, are they just angry that it got exposed? I suggest that they are upset about neither of these aspects; they are however playing a crucial roll in catapulting this “leak” into the public domain and attempting to frighten the public and whipping up a controlled frenzy at the same time.
I do not believe for one minute that one low ranking individual somehow accessed and transferred hundreds of thousands of government documents without someone detecting this. Further, I do not believe that the high tech information system used by our government would not have detected this transfer and halted it immediately……..
    Let’s take a look at recent history and how these “crisis’s” just magically and mysteriously appear just in the nick of time for some rights robbing, government controlling, expansion of government piece of crap legislation;

Cass Sustein is at the bottom of this along with Soros. Also you’ll find obama in there somewhere but of course they will protect his ass!! You are right, this didn’t happen for the reasons they say, this is PLANNED!
Most Americans are as dumb as rocks! It’s all ready too late and the sheeple are still asleep. We need a Coup de Taunt in this country and FAST!

    • Thanks Louie, Yep, it seems to me you are right Marti. This is manipulation. It is the fear of truth and the need to control what they cannot… they want more. mar

  5. Jacquie Ackerly says:

Every day we learn more. We go from nameless corporations threatening the wild places to named corporations with clear evil intentions (and I don’t use the word “evil” lightly). Ever since the first Earth Day in 1970, we have tried to raise the alarm but it was mostly dismissed as drug-fired fantasy and we were ignored. And, of course we didn’t have the resources that were at the fingertips of the corporations, and therefore no real power to make our elected officials listen, believe and act in the interest of the the wild places, the wild ones, the clean water and all the poor birds, reptiles and insects that have just quietly become extinct. And then there is the oceans . . . We must cry aloud; we must knock on doors (real and proverbial) and we have to put what money we can to support those who are in the front lines. And we have our words. And our tears. And we must use them. We have to waken the people to the raging danger that is bearing down on us.

Today I remember and honour the wild horses and burros and their supporters on Bureau of Land Management lands in the US and the Cree peoples and the land of Northern Alberta here in Canada that are being poisoned by the Tar Sands whose bitumen is sent to the States and the more than 100 first nations and 1000 streams and rivers that ate threatened by an Enbridge proposal to build a pipeline across the whole of British Columbia so that tankers can carry oil down the wild rough fiords of the BC Coast

    There can be no rest.

    • Mar Wargo says:

Jacquie, We are next for tar sands. When Obama was my senator I tried so hard to tell him the damage is not worth it. It is not. People need to change as much as humanly possible. We have done it before. The water pollution is unforgivable. There is not enough clean water as it is. Wild places are fragile and they need our awareness and protection. The fight goes on. mar

  6. Suzanne Moore says:

I’ve been trying to tell these people in the west who only see dollar signs that the horses are the canary in the mine shaft. They don’t listen because they don’t want to know.

I don’t live in the west, but I was born and raised in Texas and have visited almost all the western states except CA. Hate to think what’s happening to all that beauty and wildlife.
